Because Julia Street ran through the property on which the new turning basin would be dug, a multi-block section of the street was sacrificed in the name of progress. A similar basin would be created for the New Basin Canal, roughly around the site of today’s Union Passenger Terminal. Where the older canal terminated near Congo Square, a large turning basin was dug to serve as a sort of inland harbor. Digging deeper reveals that the confusion dates to the excavation in the 1830s of the New Basin Canal, which ran along the route of the present-day Pontchartrain Expressway.

At Target she was the Senior Group Human Resources Manager, supporting 65 Target Stores throughout eight states in the Southeast. For approximately 17 years Tonihas guided the careers of many executive leaders assisting them with identifying the best talent to proactively fuel the growth of the companies she works for.

Toni has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Florida State University in Merchandising and has her Master’s Degree from Webster University in Human Resources Management. In 2017 Toni earned the National Women’s Council Top 15 Women in Business in Louisiana Award. In addition, Toni received the National Diversity Council’s Multicultural Leadership Award for her focus on coaching and developing diverse leaders throughout the state of Louisiana. In 2012 the National Diversity Council also bestowed upon her the Most Powerful and Influential Woman award. Commissioner Tenisha Stevens received her Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from Southern University at New Orleans and completed her undergraduate studies at Dillard University.

Young people can access short-term emergency care through CHNOLA’s street outreach program, drop-in services, and emergency shelter. Our transitional housing program, Rights of Passage, helps youth hone life skills and prepares them for independent living. When youth are ready, we help them identify and move into affordable housing, while continuing to support their ongoing development.

She has extensive experience with individuals and families, specializing in mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Her private practice specializes in individual, children and family evidenced based interventions. Despite having a board of directors, Covenant House's public face has tended to be its presidents. Father Bruce Ritter founded Covenant House and served as president from 1972 to his resignation in 1990. He was succeeded by Sister Mary Rose McGeady, D.C., who served from 1990 to 2003.
We EMPOWER youth to harness their strengths, that they may leave homelessness behind for good. In Mackie’s day, the area was referred to as “Mobile Landing,” an allusion to the access it provided to the Gulf of Mexico and the markets located thereon. Given its function as an ersatz harbor, the area around the basin attracted all manner of maritime-related industry. That included the resin factory established at Julia and Prieur by Albert Mackie, whose obituary caught Hicks’ eye.

In 1977, Lance became the Director of the criminal bureau for the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, where he worked until 1980 as part of a specialty task force dealing in the prosecution of repeat offenders. He served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana from 1982 to 1990, when he was appointed to the federal bench as a federal magistrate judge. Since 1986, Africk has also been a part-time professor at the University of New Orleans. Deidre Hayes, DSW, BCD, LCSW-BACS is a Professor of Practice in the Tulane University School of Social Work. She has been a licensed clinical social worker in New Orleans for over 30 years. She has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Loyola University of the South, a master’s in social work from Tulane University, and a Doctorate in Social Work from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
When youth walk through the doors of our shelter, CHNOLA provides them with a hot meal, clothes, a bed, caring staff, and so much more. We develop a personalized case plan with each youth and work with them every step of the way to reunite them with family, when possible, or develop the tools they need to live independently. In addition to medical and mental health services, we offer behavioral healthcare, counseling, pastoral care, art and music therapy, and more. Linda contributes to her family’s business, The Gray Insurance Company, by serving on the family council. She has played an integral role in shaping critical decisions around succession planning, corporate governance, and investment strategies, ensuring the legacy and growth of the organization. Linda is involved in the Chief Executive Organization (CEO) and the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), chairing multiple educational programs and cultivating valuable networks that transcend industries and borders.
